A tray of coffee, tea, and biscuits are left on your verandah to give you a start to the day, before you venture out for your morning game drive. Africa’s wildlife is most active in the early morning and late afternoon, making these the best times to seek them out. Upon your return from the bush, breakfast awaits you, served in open-air dining rooms. The morning menu tends to reflect East Africa’s British heritage with fresh fruit, cereals, meats, and breads. The chef prepares your eggs to your specifications while delicious locally-grown coffee replaces tea as the primary breakfast beverage. Lunches are often served buffet style and feature fresh salads, soup, and hot entrees. Beef, chicken, lamb, and fish are the primary main dish ingredients but the menus can be adjusted to meet any special dietary needs. Your meals are made with fresh ingredients, a seemingly overwhelming challenge, considering the remoteness of some of the locations you visit. Each day, between 3:30-4:00 PM, you venture out in search of more animals as the African sun continues its journey toward the western horizon. Upon your return to your camp at dusk, a refreshing hot shower awaits you. You are then invited to conclude your day by gathering around a campfire for refreshments. After toasting the day with a raised glass, you are served a delicious four course meal under candlelight while the sounds of the African night begin to call. After further campfire discussions of the day’s events, you are escorted back to your cozy quarters to rest for another day. YOUR SAFARI DESTINATIONS: ARUSHA, TANZANIA Your safari truly begins with your flight from Kigali, Rwanda and your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport in Arusha, Tanzania (flight not included). Upon clearing customs, you will meet your guide, Anglebert Pantaleo, who will take charge of your luggage and bring you to your relaxing overnight accommodations at the Rivertrees Country Inn. Next to a river and in the forest where black and white colobus and blue moneys reside, Rivertrees offers you the perfect peaceful respite after your long international flights. RIVERTREES COUNTRY INN LIONS PAW CAMP - NGORONGORO CRATER The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is the world’s first multi-purpose land use area, with the goal to host not only tourism, research and conservation efforts, but also to allow local pastoralists access to ancestral grazing land. In addition, the NCA promotes the protection and exploration of archeological sites in which early hominid discoveries are found. TRUSTED SINCE 1983 © SAFARI PROFESSIONALS Within this large area, defined as from the Ngorongoro Forest in the Karatu region all the way to the Serengeti, lies Ngorongoro Crater - one of seven World Heritage Sites designated in Tanzania and the world’s largest intact and unflooded caldera. With a diameter of just 12 miles, the Crater’s 100 square miles consists of six distinct habitats: acacia forest, swamp, short and long grass savannas, riverine and woodland, with each habitat attracting a variety of animals. The 2000 ft. walls of the Crater provide a natural enclosure, in which almost 30,000 animals live. Despite the high walls of the Crater, approximately 20% of the herd animals do migrate in and out, over the course of a year. Wildlife highlights of the Crater include some of the best opportunities to view black rhino in the African bush and the highest density of hyena in any location in Africa. The relative isolation of two species in the Crater, lions and elephants, have led to unique structures of the populations of these animals. You will explore the nature of these anomalies and the work of the conservation researchers attempting to unlock their secrets. Perched in the eastern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater – away from the congestion of the other camps and lodges, Lion’s Paw Camp occupies a unique position. It is one of only two camps located within the boundary of the Ngorongoro Crater, allowing its guests to be among the very first to drive down to the Crater’s floor as soon as the Crater is opened. Each of its nine tents is heated – an important necessity at 7800 feet above sea level – and offers an exceptional level of comfort and amenities, complete with an en-suite bathroom. Perhaps the most impressive benefit of choosing Lions Paw Camp is the breathtaking view as you watch the sun decent over the western edge of the Crater. LIONS PAW CAMP SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK Possibly the most famous wildlife destination on Earth, the Serengeti ecosystem covers over 3 million acres and stretches 150 miles north from Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park to the Maasai Mara in Kenya. In February, the Serengeti grasslands that serve as the seasonal home to over two million large mammals, providing lush grazing for over an estimated 1.3 million wildebeest, TRUSTED SINCE 1983 © SAFARI PROFESSIONALS 500,000 Thomson’s gazelles and 250,000 zebras. And this concentration of wildlife provides a bounty for the area’s predators, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas and jackals. However, the actual location of the migration is unpredictable. In order to maximize your opportunities to see this impressive concentration of wildlife, you will explore two regions within the Serengeti – both the Central and the Southern regions. In addition to the wildebeest and zebra, you’ll seek other large mammals, including elephants, Maasai giraffes, Grant’s gazelles, impalas, topi, hartebeests and hippos. Today, the word, “Serengeti,” is recognized around the world. However, it was the passion of Dr. Bernhard Grzimek, the director of the Frankfurt Zoological Society in Germany, who brought the Serengeti to the attention of the world in 1959, when his film, “Serengeti Shall Not Die,” was released. Winning an Oscar as “best documentary feature,” the film and its accompanying book, raised awareness about the unique wildlife spectacle – the Serengeti Migration – and the diverse landscapes of this unique ecosystem. OLDUPAI GORGE This morning’s drive takes you to Olduvai Gorge, one of the world's most important prehistoric archaeological sites. It was here, in 1959, that Mary Leakey discovered the fossilized bone fragments of one of our earliest hominid ancestors. Several animal fossils, which have been discovered in the gorge, are displayed in a small museum at the Oldupai Visitors Center. (Although most frequently written as "Olduvai," the correct spelling for the name of this area is "Oldupai," the Maasai name for a local species of wild sisal.) TRUSTED SINCE 1983 © SAFARI PROFESSIONALS WOODLANDS CAMP – SOUTHERN SERENGETI Located near the boundary that separates Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the Lake Ndutu region is justifiably famous as one of Tanzania’s most popular destinations during this, the season of the Serengeti Migration. It is here that hundreds of thousands of pregnant wildebeest converge to give birth, taking advantage of the important nutrition provided by the fresh grasses. Kopjes (pronounced like “copies’) are large granite outcroppings you’ll find scattered across the Serengeti plains. They provide unique habitats for a variety of wildlife species. The Moru Kopjes are renowned as the home of a population of the highly-endangered black rhino. And the nearby Gol Kopjes host the highest density of cheetahs in East Africa, providing the best opportunities to witness the world’s fastest land mammal as it pursues its favorite prey – the Thomson’s gazelle. Access to the Gor Kopjes is only permitted to a limited number of travelers who have received the necessary permit to enter the area. You will be among the few who will have the privilege of visiting this uniquely important wildlife habitat. Woodlands Camp lies along a grassy corridor between Lake Ndutu and the Moru Kopjes. Nestled among a group of acacia trees, it is the perfect base from which to explore the variety of wildlife habitats found in the area. With just nine “Out-Of-Africa” styled tented accommodations, you’ll enjoy a sense of intimacy and comfort seldom found on safari. WOODLANDS CAMP SAMETU CAMP – CENTRAL SERENGETI Your temporary home, Sametu Camp, is located near the banks of the Ngarenyuki River. This spring-fed river serves as the base of the famous Sametu pride of lions. The Sametu pride is often labeled a “super pride,” due to the fact that the same family group has dominated this portion of the Serengeti for at least the past 42 years! Today, the Sametu pride is ruled by a unique coalition of four, exceptionally large males. Named after four Greek gods - Zeus, Ares, Apollo and Demeter – these male lions cooperate in protecting their pride from other male lions. As we track the Sametu pride, we will learn how ongoing research projects focus on these dominant predators and the roles they play in the savanna. TRUSTED SINCE 1983 © SAFARI PROFESSIONALS Situated at the secluded eastern end of the Seronera Valley, Sametu Camp is one of the newest and most exclusive camps in the Serengeti. With only six tents, the staff of Sametu Camp prides itself on providing the highest level of personal service to their guests. Each tent offers spacious sleeping quarters, en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets as well as running water, and 24-hour electricity. The camp, with its proximity to the Ngarenyuki River is perfectly located to enable outstanding game viewing throughout the season. SAMETU CAMP TRUSTED SINCE 1983 © SAFARI PROFESSIONALS
